ALHAJI AHMED RUFAI MOHAMMED

Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Mohammed, born on 31 December 1951 in Kano, is a distinguished administrator, investment executive, and corporate governance leader with over four decades of service in Nigeria’s public and private sectors. He received his early education in Kano before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Second Class Lower) from Abdullahi Bayero College, Ahmadu Bello University (now Bayero University Kano) in 1976.

He began his career with the Kano State Civil Service in 1977 and shortly thereafter joined Kano State Investment and Properties Ltd (KSIP), where he rose to Financial Controller. He later served as Director of Finance and Investment at Kano Foundation before joining the National Provident Fund during its transition to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). Rising through the ranks, he became Managing Director/CEO in 2002, serving until 2007.

During his tenure, he led a landmark restructuring following the Pension Reform Act 2004, overseeing a seamless workforce reorganisation and facilitating the successful public-private partnership that established Trustfund Pensions Ltd, with assets exceeding ₦50 billion. He also contributed to drafting the Employee Compensation Bill that reshaped NSITF’s mandate.

Alhaji Mohammed has served on the boards of several major financial institutions, including IMB International Bank (now FCMB), Afribank (now Polaris Bank), Standard Trust Bank (now UBA), FSDH, Kapital Insurance (now Unity Capital), Capital Hotels, and Royal Exchange Plc. He also served as President and Chairman of Council of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria from 2016 to 2018.

A Fellow of multiple professional bodies and alumnus of Manchester Business School and Stanford/Harvard executive programmes, he is also a committed philanthropist. He founded Annur School, AMPIS, and co-founded Queens Science Academy (STEM) for girls. In 2025, he was appointed Chairman of L’Excellence Nigeria Ltd, an enterprise of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Bayero University Kano.
