Kabir Mustapha Umar
Kabir Mustapha Umar is a Nigerian biotechnology scholar, research leader, and academic administrator with over nineteen years of experience in molecular biology, environmental biotechnology, and sustainable agricultural systems. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University Kano, where he also serves in research leadership roles supporting innovation, postgraduate training, and international collaboration.
Dr. Umar holds a Ph.D. in Food Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia. His research integrates plant tissue culture, microbial biotechnology, genetic engineering, and bioinformatics to develop climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable solutions for dryland agriculture. His work spans biopesticide development, biofertilizers, molecular diagnostics, greenhouse-based crop improvement, and stress tolerance in crops such as ginger, date palm, and Napier grass.
He has coordinated and contributed to multi-million-dollar projects funded by the World Bank under the Africa Centres of Excellence initiative, where he also served as Environmental Safeguard Officer, ensuring compliance with international environmental and social standards. Dr. Umar is actively involved in capacity building, having trained numerous postgraduate students and early-career scientists in molecular techniques, laboratory quality systems, and research design.
An accomplished author, he has published extensively in reputable international journals and contributed to conference proceedings on dryland innovation and sustainable development. His work aligns strongly with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly food security, climate action, and biodiversity conservation. Through research, mentorship, and strategic partnerships, Dr. Umar continues to advance biotechnology-driven solutions that address critical agricultural and environmental challenges across Africa’s drylands.
